The labia minora are the two flaps of tissue at the opening of the female genitalia

For most women, they are not visible, as they are hidden below the labia majora, which is the mound of tissue surrounding the opening of the female genitalia

Unfortunately for some women, the labia minora are excessively large. This can be due to being like this from an early age, or due to hormonal changes either in puberty or pregnancy.

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that involves reshaping or reducing the size of the labia minora, the inner lips of the female genitalia. What is Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is performed whilst you are awake and can be performed in the clinic or the hospital

Local anaesthetic cream is initially applied to the area for 30 minutes so it is nice and numb

You will then be taken to the procedure room and placed in a comfortable specially designed chair

Dr. Faisal will administer the local anaesthetic. This is painless and helps to make the procedure painless. It also reduces the amount of bleeding

Dr. Faisal will then perform the procedure. He will either use the wedge technique or the edge technique depending on the situation. The Labiaplasty surgery procedure normally takes 60 minutes. We advise you to bring some headphones so you can listen to some music during the procedure.

Sutures that dissolve are used to close the wound and a sanitary towel is applied to protect the wound and also absorb spotting of blood which is normal after the procedure

What Is The Recovery Following Labiaplasty?

Following the procedure, you will be allowed to go home almost immediately

You will be given painkillers to help with the pain and swelling

It is vitally important that you rest in a laying down position for 3-4 days. This is to reduce the dependence on the operated area and reduce the swelling

Dr. Faisal highly recommends that you apply an ice pack every hour for 10 minutes for the first 3-4 days. This will also help to reduce swelling and discomfort

There will be moderate discomfort for 72 hours, but this is well controlled by the pain killers

When going to the toilet, use a water bottle to irrigate the area whilst you are urinating. This will help to clean the area and prevent bacteria from colonising

Dr. Faisal will see you at 1 week, 2 week and 6 weeks

You will be able to return to work by the start of the second week

You should refrain from intimate relationships for 6 weeks

You should also not engage in physical exercise for 6 weeks

Swelling can persist for up to 6 months after the procedure and is not something to be worried about

How Can I Prepare For the Procedure

Dr. Faisal recommends taking 1-week leave from work

Arranging to have friends or family close by for the first 3-4 days is advisable

Blood-thinning medications such as aspirin, warfarin, and Plavix should be stopped 1 week before the procedure

If you develop thrush in the genital area you must inform Dr. Faisal, as this could complicate the recovery

Smoking harms wound healing and has to be stopped 3 weeks before the operation

I came to Dr.Faisal not sure of anything. I wasn’t happy with my body as I had a lot of excess skin due to massive weight loss. I was scared of the idea of a surgery, so came in hoping for an alternative. Here I am months - 3 months post my surgery, wearing a pair of jeans that would have never fit me before. I had a lower body lift surgery done, and I must say my results are amazing. My body has changed so much, and I am very very happy with the way I look now. Dr.Faisal is a great doctor. He will make sure you are aware of everything before and after the procedure and is always there for his patients. My favorite trait about him is that he is always available. Being a patient who has low pain tolerance, and someone who worries a lot, I would always call him. I would have a lot to ask before and after the surgery- and he was always there. It didn’t matter what day or time it was, he made sure to help with every little thing and I am very grateful for him. Two words to describe my experience with Dr. Faisal: life changing. I had a breast reduction and it has changed my life! The procedure itself was painful for the first 2 hours and much to my surprise I was ready to go home only 4 hours after waking up and ready to return to work only 3 days later.
